How to play on the Purgatory map in Free Fire

While gathering loot and taking down opposing players is the key goal in a battle royale like Garena Free Fire, the maps that hold all of these battles are just as important. Each map in the game – as well as the individual locations in each map – hold plenty of secrets, and it's important to become familiar with them before dropping in.
Here, you'll learn everything you need to know about Purgatory, Free Fire's second-ever map. This guide will go over Purgatory's general layout, a few locations to consider whether you want a slow or fast start, and the best strategies in order to win the day and earn that Booyah. This map offers a lot to the battle royale experience, so make sure that you explore it as much as you can.

All about Purgatory

Purgatory is a tale of two halves, as the northern and southern sections of the map are noticeably different. The top half is wide open, with flat lands like Golf Course and Fields, while the bottom half is more urban and dense with loot.
This difference will influence how your matches play out based on the safe zone's movement. If safety rests in the south, you're going to be holed up in buildings, avoiding snipers and zip-lining opponents. But if you're in the north, that means visibility is key. Bear this in mind as the safe zone diminishes, and you should be able to score that Booyah.

Purgatory hot spots with the most loot

Like every map in Free Fire, Purgatory has multiple landmarks that act as points of reference during a match. Some of them attract more players right at the start of a match, and landing there doesn't give you much time to breathe.
If you are looking for combat and do want to start fast in Purgatory, however, here are three locations that will let you get things moving quickly:
  • Marbleworks: Marbleworks has two elements that make it a hot spot. First, it has multiple buildings along with sizable loot, so you can drop in and immediately find cover and loot. Second, it's close to the centre of the map, so there's a good chance it will be inside the safe zone for most of the match.
  • Brasilia: Brasilia basically is the centre of the map, and has more buildings full of loot like SMG and LMGs, so it's not hard to imagine how popular this place can be. Landing at Brasilia is like playing a match on fast forward, and if you're not prepared, you'll be fast forwarding back to the lobby screen.
  • Central: While Central is further away from the centre of the map than the other two locations listed here, it more than makes up for that shortcoming thanks to how much loot is lying around. There are more buildings in this small area than any other location on the map, so expect to duck and weave through doors and hallways if you land here.

Low-key landing locations

You don't always need to land guns blazing though. There may be some matches where you'd rather explore the map and familiarise yourself with it. Purgatory holds plenty of places where you can stop and catch your breath, and knowing them will be a big help as you begin playing seriously.
For those moments when you want to take it slow, here are a few places to have a look at:
  • Golf Course: Golf Course is, as its name implies, a golf course, which means it's a large stretch of flat open land. However, it is close to both Central and Brasilia, and there's enough loot lying around the area to justify having a look here at least once. Be wary if you don't land here alone, though, as that open space can leave you wide open.
  • Crossroads: Crossroads is the best option for an 'off the beaten path' landing if you’re looking for slow gameplay. Its location on the northwestern corner of the map is a great distance away from the busiest areas, and you'll be able to arm yourself well enough for the occasional player you may find on your way into the safe zone. But the area is very thin in terms of gear so chances to enhance yourself will be hard to come by.
  • Ski Lodge: Ski Lodge tends to be a little busier than Crossroads, as it's a massive structure with a good amount of loot hiding within. It is the highest spot on the map and is quite popular with snipers. However, its location on the easternmost part of the map keeps it from being a true hot zone. Landing here often leads to powerful weapons with little danger, and that makes it a great option.

Best Purgatory strategies

Purgatory's open stretches of land – like those in Golf Course – are perfect for long-range combat, so keep an assault rifle or sniper rifle handy in one of your weapon slots. You don't want to get caught 100 yards away from an enemy with a shotgun; it's not going to end well for you.
Also, while landing there isn't always encouraged, getting into Brasilia from wherever you land is something you should think about as a match goes on. It will routinely be in the safe zone, and its near-centre location means it will get a lot of foot traffic. So, if you can secure a building and keep a watchful eye, you might be able to get the jump on a few opponents.
