Mr. Wright Way’s top games and Black characters

As a retired US Navy veteran with a longtime passion for video games, collectibles, and photography, Mr. Wright Way shares his love of gaming with others through his YouTube channel. We spoke to him about Black representation in gaming and what he’s playing now.

Who are your favorite Black characters in games?

I love this question because there are so many to choose from! When I was younger, it was Adam Hunter from Streets of Rage and The Rock from the WWE games. I’d also say Leroy Smith, Eddy Gordo, and Master Raven from Tekken. And I can’t forget my boy, Sean Matsuda from Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike, Storm from the X-Men games, and Jacqui Briggs and Tanya from Mortal Kombat.

What is your perspective on representation in the gaming community?

I want people to respect each other and to understand that video games are for everyone. The goal of my community is to create a safe space for like-minded individuals. I don’t care about your sexuality, religion, or what food you like. Stop arguing over which plastic box is better and remember video games are supposed to be fun.

Which games inspire you as a creator?

A good story inspires me most. I want to be transported into a new world and have experiences only games can provide.

That said, fighting games are my jam. When I need something to play, these three games are some of my favorite ones to jump into.

Stereotypes aside, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is an amazing game. The star of the game, Carl Johnson, might not be a role model, but he’s not one-sided either, and he was the first Black main character in the GTA series. The endless possibilities of the open world make this a must play. Rockstar took everything we loved from the PlayStation 2 version and updated it for mobile.

I know I’m not the only comic book fan curious to see what an evil Superman would be like, which is exactly what you get in the Injustice series. In this sequel, you get more of your favorite DC characters, along with easy controls, great graphics, and a banging soundtrack. A perfect choice for anyone who loves comic books and fighting games.

Street Fighter IV is one of my favorite games of all time. I own it on every console, tablet, and phone. It’s part of a legendary series known worldwide, and Capcom did an amazing job delivering a true Street Fighter experience for mobile. You have to check it out.
