Rewind to Old School Runescape’s rich history

RuneScape has changed a great deal since its launch a whopping two decades ago. Those changes have kept Jagex’s MMO relevant for the modern age, but for those who preferred the original’s old school charm and straightforward gameplay, Old School RuneScape is a wondrously faithful version of the classic MMO, exactly how it was back in ‘07.
To celebrate the timeless appeal of this retro revival, join us as we look back at one of many pivotal moments that helped cement Runescape into the history books.

So, what is Old School RuneScape?

Jam-packed with skills to master, quests to complete, and regions to explore, RuneScape has something for everyone. Slaying demons, performing alchemy, or fishing by the sea: these are just a few of RuneScape’s many pastimes.
It’s not just a rich world, but a living one – driven by player freedom and expression. Wherever you go, you’ll see players exchanging advice, chatting about life, or wagering their wealth in heated duels.
Like all great communities, RuneScape has no shortage of beloved stories, and this is one of its best – and bloodiest.

The Falador Massacre

On 6/6/06, the first player in RuneScape’s history to max out their Construction level hosted a public house party. However, when the event was overrun by too many guests, the host kicked everyone out of their home, spilling them out onto the streets of Falador.
Due to a glitch, thanks to such high player numbers, those in the house’s PvP dungeon emerged able to attack anyone, anywhere – even in designated safe zones. That’s when user Durial321 struck, ravaging the city, killing and looting in a spree for the ages.

An enduring legacy

Durial321’s rampage attracted flocks of shocked and helpless onlookers, as news spread of their actions. It wasn’t until Jagex moderators stepped in and patched the glitch that Falador returned to safety, but not before dozens were slain and millions worth of items looted.
The massacre became a legend among players both in and out of RuneScape. Eventually Jagex enshrined it as lore, with Durial321’s character even appearing as an enemy in Falador.

Get involved

If you think you might be too late to the party, don’t worry. Old School RuneScape receives regular content updates, from seasonal events to modes to entire regions. Each new update adds another chapter to RuneScape’s history and, as major updates must pass a public vote, players are in charge of the game’s destiny.
Whether you’re a veteran or a noob, it’s a great time to get stuck in.
