How to play Spike in Brawl Stars

Brawl Stars features over 80 Brawlers, and you may find it difficult to choose just which Brawler you want to take onto the battlefield next. From Assassins to Damage Dealers and everything in between, there are a lot of things to consider when choosing a hero for a match. Here you’ll learn about Spike – the damage dealing ‘One of a Kind’ Legendary Brawler.
Spike, a sentient cactus, may look cute and silly in the beginning, but behind his charming demeanor lies a potent Brawler. While his low health makes him difficult to master, with attacks that can hurt groups of enemies all at once and the ability to gain back health quickly, he is a Brawler worth using whenever you can.

Who is Spike?

Spike is a cactus-like creature, usually donning a purple vest and a cheery demeanor as he dances. His smile can be a little off-putting, but his potent abilities make up for it. You can purchase him from the in-game shop as he is a Legendary Brawler.
Most players think Spike is merely a sidekick at the ranch where Colt and Shelly spend their time. However, it seems there's more to Spike than meets the eye, as his in-game bio also says that "nobody could begin to guess the depths of his trauma." There are many theories around about his origin, but his past is still shrouded in mystery.

Spike's attacks

As a glass cannon, Spike can hurt a lot, but can’t take too much damage in return. His basic attack – Needle Grenade – fires a small explosive filled with spikes towards his enemies. When it explodes, its spikes shoot out in different directions, dealing damage to multiple enemies at once.
His Super, Stick Around!, is also a thorn-themed grenade, but this one has a lot more staying power. When it hits the ground, it creates a small area-of-effect that damages and slows down any enemies caught within it. It's a great move for when multiple enemies are in close range, as you can capitalize and take them all out at once.

Spike's build options

Spike's Gadget options are vastly different, with one focusing on offense and the other on defense. Popping Pincushion shoots three consecutive waves of cactus spines in all directions, dealing damage to every enemy in their path. Life Plant, meanwhile, sees Spike spawn a cactus that offers cover to teammates, and when destroyed, restores some health to each friendly player nearby.
His Star Power options are also an offense vs. defense coin flip, though each choice affects a different ability in Spike's arsenal. Fertilize activates after Spike uses the Stick Around!, and heals Spike while he's standing inside its area-of-effect. Curveball, meanwhile, makes the spikes from Needle Grenade curve, making them more versatile and likely to cause more damage.
Finally, Spike's Hypercharge gives a major boost to his Super Stick Around!, as it increases its AOE by a whole 20%. Couple this with the Fertilize Star Power, and Spike will be able to heal as much as he will hurt – negating his biggest drawback of low health.

Best Spike strategies

Spike is a must in team-based games, as he can attack multiple enemies at once. He works great as a counter against close-ranged Brawlers like El Primo and Mortis. Needle Grenade's spikes offer secondary damage with every throw, and Stick Around!'s area-of-effect can be nasty if enemy teams are keeping a tight formation.
Brawl Ball is also a great fit for Spike, as the slowing capability of his Super can help steal the ball from an opponent in a crucial moment. He can also excel in Duo Showdown mode, as he can close out games with a single attack if given the chance.
