Meet the director: Devsisters

Video and animation major Eunji Lee began her games industry career as a concept artist on Cookie Run. Eleven years later, she’s now director of the latest entry in the series, Cookie Run: Kingdom. Join Lee as she explores her passion for game production, the women who inspired her artistic journey, and her directorial debut.
Play: What do you like the most about working in games?
Eunji Lee: The accessibility of mobile gaming connects us with players from all around the world, but it also connects players to one another. This is especially true of live-service games whose longevity allows players to build relationships, communities, and joyful memories around them. It’s always a pleasant and magical experience to expand beyond the conventional relationship between consumers and creators.
What makes Cookie Run: Kingdom special to you?
We wanted Cookie Run: Kingdom to deliver universal fun; our player base consists of people of all ages and from all corners of the world. My goal is always to strive for games that bring joy and excitement to everyone.
How has being a woman shaped your career in gaming? OR How has being a woman shaped a unique point of view or perspective in gaming?
Delivering a universally resonant experience is the primary driving force behind my creativity. Cookie Run: Kingdom wasn’t developed with any type of person in mind, and that principle probably influenced me more than being a female game developer. If I inspire other female game developers, I would most definitely highlight that as a profound honor and the greatest influence on my career as a producer and creator.
Who is one woman who's inspired you and why?
Many have inspired me. However, Tove Jansson, the creator of the Moomin series, has inspired me the most. When you take a close look at the world and stories of the Moomins, we learn about the life of Tove Jansson and her love of adventure. Though the stories are filled with fear, uncertainty, loneliness, and times where beauty is hard to find, they always have a silver lining that evolves into precious moments. These moments inspire me to live life to its fullest.
What does 2022 have in store for you – and for Devsisters/Cookie Run: Kingdom?
I want to thank the Cookie Run: Kingdom players for all the love and support they’ve shown us. In 2022, I hope to reciprocate that love, and wish the world luck in finding hope and courage on this adventure alongside our small and adorable Cookies.
