Complete guide to Town Hall in Clash of Clans

If you’ve been playing Clash of Clans, then you’re already familiar with the Town Hall in your Home Village – you may have even upgraded it a couple times. This guide tackles Town Halls in greater detail, so that you’ll know exactly what to expect as you continue to upgrade your own and move up through the different levels.

The Town Hall is the most essential building in Clash of Clans. Also referred to as the Builder Hall in Builder Base mode and the Goblin Hall in the Goblin Map version, and more, upgrading your Town Hall is key to advancing in the game. Effectively protecting your Town Hall makes all the difference in successfully defending your village, and preventing its destruction also denies your opponent a star. There are currently 17 Town Hall levels to progress through.

Town Halls have the highest hit points of any building, structure or defense in your village (aside from walls). If you’ve optimized your base for defense, then ideally your Town Hall should be the most difficult target to take down, and doing so should require a great deal of strategizing on the part of your opponent.

The level of your Town Hall directly impacts the strength of your village. The number of available defenses, Heroes, troops, buildings, spells, and more (along with their maximum upgrade levels) all increase each time you upgrade your Town Hall. You'll also gain the ability to unlock more powerful spells, advanced troops, and new buildings, all contributing to your village’s overall power.

This is why it’s a smart strategy to slow down and complete all of your upgrades before you progress to the next Town Hall level. The matchmaking system will pit you against players with a similar Town Hall level, so if you’ve rushed through upgrades without taking the time to level up all of these elements, you could find yourself facing progressively tougher opponents without having the strength to defeat them.

The more you upgrade your Town Hall, the more unique buildings and defenses become available to help you fortify your base and get the edge in battle. These unlocks aren’t just helpful; in some cases, they can change your adventure entirely by introducing new and vital gameplay elements.

For example, you’ll unlock the Clan Castle at Town Hall Level 3, allowing you to join a clan and reap the benefits of participating in Clan Wars, Clan Games, and War Leagues. Your first Hero, alongside Dark Elixir, is unlocked at Town Hall Level 7, while Town Hall 10 introduces the powerful Inferno Tower defense building. Progressing through Town Hall levels is exciting, but can be detrimental if you rush ahead, so take your time when starting out.

It’s important to pay special attention to protecting your Town Hall, whether you’re warding off raids or facing off in Clan Wars. Attackers that manage to completely destroy your Town Hall will loot a percentage of your trophies in the process, along with precious resources that are stored in there, like Gold and Elixir.

Town Halls can and often do determine the outcome of Clan Wars, as they award a guaranteed star if your opponent destroys them. As you gain more experience in the game, you may come across defensive strategies that use the Town Hall as bait to absorb the brunt of initial damage and force the enemy into a 2-star raid. For now, though, we recommend leading with caution and defending your Town Hall above everything else.

Now that you know how crucial it is to keep your Town Hall standing strong, you may be wondering if there are other ways to bolster its defenses. Fortunately, your Town Hall actually becomes weaponized once it reaches Level 12. The addition of the Giga Tesla, an intimidating defense that’s triggered when your Town Hall takes damage, may just make your opponents think twice before targeting your base.

Just like your other defenses, the more you upgrade the Giga Tesla, the stronger it becomes – both in terms of damage output and hit points. Once it reaches level 5, the Giga Tesla also boasts a special ability, dropping a powerful burst of electricity once it is destroyed. Alongside its ability to target both air and ground troops, the Giga Tesla can wipe out the last of an enemy’s troops before they can bring it down to its last hit point.
