That’s why we’re thrilled to speak with artist and indie developer NomnomNami, whose games examine the discovery of sexual identity and the quest to conquer shame with love. Play: Could you please tell us a little bit about yourself?
Nami: Hi, I'm Nami, and I make games about cute gays to melt your heart! I started writing visual novels in 2013 and plan to make them for the rest of my life.
Why is supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion in games important for you?
There are huge gaps in the types of human experience reflected in games. It feels really validating to see fictional characters who feel the same as you; I want to deliver that feeling to the people who don't usually get to experience it.
How has being Queer played a role in your work?
I originally set out to make games about girls who like girls, because that's what I am. But I've since expanded to write about more genders and experiences. The more I learn, the more I can write.
What is the ultimate aim of your games?
I'd really like to keep telling stories that resonate deeply with people in ways that no other games have. Fans have often told me that my games have helped them figure themselves out. There's nothing more I can ask for than that. I'm grateful to everyone who opens their heart to my stories!
Why is supporting the asexual community important to you?
Asexuality is still an extremely rare subject in games. Despite knowing for over half my life that I am asexual, I can only think of a handful of games that specifically address the topic, and all of them are VERY recent. I'm here to fill the gap for my fellow aces!
