How to set a budget and manage subscriptions

While many Play apps are available at no charge, you may want to purchase a premium app or in-app content. Learn how to do so safely and how to keep tabs on your Play expenses below.

Budget and track monthly spending

Want help keeping track of your spending? Set a Play budget: Tap your profile icon on the right side of the search bar, then select “Payments & subscriptions” > “Budget & history.” Next, tap “Set budget,” enter your monthly budget, and hit “Save.”

If you're close to or over your budget, you’ll get a message every time you buy an item from your account. Curious about your spending trends? Go back to “Budget & history” and you’ll see how much you’ve spent this month at the top.

Tip

Your monthly budget history is stored in your Google Account, but it’s removed after 1 year.

Manage subscriptions

Subscriptions on Play are for an indefinite term, and you’ll be charged at the beginning of each billing cycle according to your subscription terms (for example, weekly or annually), unless you unsubscribe.

Important: When you uninstall an app, your subscription won't cancel. To cancel a subscription, tap your profile icon, then select “Payments & subscriptions” > “Subscriptions.” Tap the subscription you want to cancel, then choose “Cancel subscription.”

Purchase safely and securely

With Play's billing system, you can safely and securely purchase digital products and in-app content, including subscriptions. Your payment information is securely stored to your Google Account and will not be shared with app developers. If you experience an issue with a purchase made through Play’s billing system, you can request a refund through Google Play.

To add a form of payment to your Play account, tap your profile icon, then select “Payments & Subscriptions” > “Payment methods.” Follow the instructions to add the payment method of your choice.

Tip

To prevent accidental purchases, you can require authentication any time you make a purchase.
