All you need to know about builds in Brawl Stars

While you're looking at different Brawlers and choosing which one you want to try out next, you might notice a few empty symbols on the top right corner of the Brawler screen. These four slots – Gadgets, Star Power, Gear, and Hypercharge – all contribute to that Brawler's "build," and that can open up a whole new world of possibilities.
Builds are assigned the same for each Brawler, but you can customize individual characters differently enough that you'll be able to experiment with some wacky stuff to find your favorite. This guide will run through the basics of builds, including when they become available and what each slot means for the Brawler you're working on.

Unlocking builds

Builds in Brawl Stars do not unlock all at once; instead, each of the four slots unlocks when a Brawler reaches certain Power Levels. The order in which each slot unlocks is the same for every Brawler: Gadgets unlock at Level 7, then the Gears at Level 8, followed by the Star Powers at Level 9, then the second Gear at Level 10, and finally the Hypercharge at level 11.
Each of these slots impact a different part of a Brawler's performance, whether it's boosting stats, enhancing abilities, or adding new moves to their repertoire. Next, we'll dive into each individual category, provide some examples of what they can do, and how you should approach a build for your Brawler.

Gadgets

Gadgets add an extra ability to a Brawler's moveset, ranging from attacks to temporary stat buffs, though they can only be used a set number of times per match. Each Brawler has two unique Gadgets available to them; you can choose one to unlock at Level 7, while the other can be purchased for Gold later on.
Examples of Gadgets include:
  • El Primo's Asteroid Belt summons a small meteor that crashes into the map, dealing big damage to anyone within the crash zone
  • Barley's Herbal Tonic throws a healing potion toward an ally and creates an area of effect that restores their health for a brief time
  • Bull's T-Bone Injector instantly heals 1000 health

Star Power

Star Power is also unique for each Brawler. However, unlike Gadgets with a set number of uses, they activate after certain conditions are met. They can be tied to the Brawler's super move or their health levels.
Each Brawler has two separate Star Powers – though only one can be equipped at a time – with one unlocking at Level 9 and the other available for purchase with Gold later.
A few examples of Star Power abilities include:
  • Shelly's Band-Aid instantly heals her over 1200 HP when her health falls below 40%
  • Poco's Da Capo! heals allies hit by his standard attacks
  • Pam's Mama's Squeeze allows her healing turret to also damage enemies

Gears

Gears can be equipped to give characters stat boosts, like increased Gadget uses or enhanced speed. Each character can equip two pieces of Gear from seven choices, with one of those choices being Super Gear that's more specifically tuned to that character. While the Gear choices are mostly the same across the roster, they do need to be individually unlocked for each Brawler.
The six Gear pieces for all characters are:
  • Speed - 15% movement speed increase while moving in bushes
  • Vision - Successful attacks reveal an opponent's location for two seconds
  • Health - Health recovery is 50% faster
  • Shield - A 900 HP shield is added to the character's health bar and absorbs damage first. When the character is at full health, the shield will regenerate as well.
  • Damage - 15% extra damage for attacks when the character is under 50% health
  • Gadget Charge - Equipped Gadget gets one more charge per battle.

Hypercharge

Finally, the Hypercharge slot adds a purple button to the screen with a meter that fills up throughout the match. When the meter is full, tap the purple button to activate the Hypercharge effect, which buffs all stats as well as the super move's capabilities.
While the Hypercharge slot unlocks when a character is at Power Level 11, the ability to use it requires a purchase with Gold in order for the button to be activated. El Primo, for example, requires 5000 Gold to add his Hypercharge to the build slot.
