Minecraft’s Creative and Survival modes explained

Minecraft’s Creative and Survival modes both offer a fun experience, but each one has a distinctly different flavor. Below, we'll explain the features of each mode so you can decide which one to play.

Creative Mode

Creative Mode turns Minecraft into the ultimate digital sandbox. You can go anywhere in the world, destroy whatever blocks you see, and build whatever your mind can conjure up. Best of all, your journey begins with nearly every resource in the game already at your disposal – and a toolset with unlimited durability – which gives you the immediate means to make your own fun.
The only limits to your Creative Mode experience are your own imagination. Creative Mode is an exceptional choice for low-key, relaxing gaming with no pressure, no confines, and no enemies – unless you spawn them yourself, of course. If you're looking for a place to get lost for a while, Minecraft's Creative Mode is a great place to start.

Survival Mode

In Survival Mode, you’re dropped into the world to gather your own resources in order to build shelter, tools, weapons, and more. There are also aggressive creatures that may attack you, so staying alive is paramount. Long Survival Mode runs will eventually offer new places to explore, secrets to find, and items to earn, but getting there will take wits, cunning, and careful planning.

Try both modes

If you’re looking for something with low stakes, then Creative Mode is a great choice for you. Meanwhile, if you want something with a little challenge to it, we'd recommend Survival Mode. The beauty of Minecraft is that both modes complement each other. No matter your preferred playstyle, make sure to jump between Creative and Survival modes for the full Minecraft experience.
