Learn a new language with Duolingo

Take a gamified approach to language learning with Duolingo. Choose from over 40 languages to work through in bite-sized lessons, and let Duo, the charming little green owl, take you under his wing as you build your vocabulary and make daily practice a habit.

Pick a language

Dreaming of mastering Spanish for new travel adventures? Craving the challenge of ancient Latin? Duolingo is your passport to language learning. Select the language you want to learn, then tell them where you’re starting from, whether your fluency is beginner to advanced, so Duolingo can get you started with a relevant lesson. Finish up your account by choosing a reason you’re learning – is it to advance your career, make new friends, or just for fun?
Tip
Turn on notifications to help you stay motivated and remember to practice your new language.

Start a lesson

Now that you’re set up, you’re ready for your first lesson! Along the way, you’ll encounter exercises such as matching the correct image to a spoken word or translating simple words and phrases. When you hear a bell chime, that means you got the answer right – way to go!
Tip
If you have an Accessibility need, tap the face icon on the navigation bar, then tap the Settings icon and scroll down to Accessibility. Here, you can toggle the speaking exercises, listening exercises, animations, or vibration feedback on or off.
Practice lessons.

See your progress

Duolingo makes learning fun with cute and quirky characters, playful challenges, and timed lessons that push you to beat your own pace. Plus, with Streaks, you’ll be hooked on keeping that daily practice going. Ready to see how far you’ve come? Tap the Home icon on the navigation bar to see your unit number, current topic, (like “greet people” in Unit 1), and a handy notebook with your Unit Guidebook, grammar tips, and key phrases.
Tip
Want to jump ahead a unit? Scroll down to the next unit and tap “Jump here.” If you pass the test, you’ll move to the next group of lessons.
Navigate and complete lessons in the Home tab.

Practice with Heart

When learning a new language, you’re bound to make a few mistakes, so Duolingo gives you five Hearts, or chances, every day so you can keep on learning even if you make an error. If you run out of Hearts, you’ll have to take a break.
Tip
As you practice, you’ll earn gems that you can use to buy more Hearts. Or try a premium account for unlimited Hearts – plus personalized lessons and an ad-free experience.

Try to land on the Leaderboard

To review any mistakes you’ve made in past lessons, tap the dumbbell icon on the navigation bar, then scroll down to “Your collections,” and tap Mistakes. As you learn and level up, you can also attempt to land a spot on the Leaderboard by completing daily lessons – tap the shield icon on the navigation to view your current status.
Tip
Discover learning tips, like how repetition aids your brain when learning new concepts, to help you on your journey by tapping the bell icon on the navigation bar.
Check the Leaderboard to see where you rank.
Another way to track your progress and achievements is through the face icon on the navigation bar. Tap “View All” to unlock your Personal Records – like your number of perfect lessons or longest streak – and celebrate your progress with Awards for things like completing 20 perfect lessons or mastering 50 new words.
Tip
Invite friends to Duolingo to celebrate your learning achievements, challenge each other, and hold one another accountable.
Tap the profile tab to view your Stats and Achievements, or find and follow your friends.
Looking for an extra incentive to complete your lessons? Tap the treasure chest icon on the navigation bar to view Daily Quests like spending 15 minutes learning or scoring 90% or higher on a lesson. When you complete a certain number of Quests each month, you’ll earn badges and rewards.
With fun lessons to simplify learning, helpful tools to track your progress, and your friendly owl pal Duo to guide and encourage you, challenging yourself to try something new has never been so rewarding. Just say the word to get started, whether it’s oui, si, or ja.
