Play: This year, Google’s theme for Black History Month is “It Takes a Village.” Can you tell us a little about your village?
Big Freedia: My village is my community. It’s everyone – my boyfriend, my extended family, my dancers, my team, and my fans.
How do you like to stay connected to them?
At home, I gather with close friends and family regularly. My house is like the central Freedia HQ. We cook and celebrate special occasions – all my family and team come through!
Who are some of your favorite Black creators and why?
There are so many, but a musical favorite is Beyoncé (of course). Fashion-wise, I am loving Christopher John Rogers’s bold, colorful clothes. There’s also Bradley L. Bowers, a designer in New Orleans who’s getting notoriety for his furniture, objects, and art.
You’ll be showcasing your entrepreneurial spirit on your upcoming show, Big Freedia Means Business. Between all your business ventures and your music, how do you find time to unwind?
It’s hard sometimes, but when I need to relax, I have my team clear my calendar and hold off from all appointments and press. I’ll carve out some time either at home or a remote place and just chill.
What can viewers expect from your episode of Made From Scratch?
They can expect to see me making one of my signature Big Freedia New Orleans recipes! You’ll have to watch to find out more.
As the queen of New Orleans bounce, do you listen to music while cooking?
I grew up in the church choir, so listening to gospel music while I cook makes me feel at home.
What’s next for you?
2023 is going to be big for me! I’m coming out with new music and my TV show on Fuse, and I’m working on opening a hotel in New Orleans. Stay tuned for more on all of that.
