What Grain Brain did for wheat, this book by a leading peripheral nerve surgeon now does for sugar, revealing how it causes crippling nerve damage throughout the body—in our feet, organs, and brain—why sugar and carbohydrates are harmful to the body's nerves, and how eliminating them can mitigate and even reverse the damage.
If you suffer from ailments your doctors can’t seem to diagnose or help—mysterious rashes, unpredictable digestive problems, debilitating headaches, mood and energy swings, constant tiredness—nerve compression is the likely cause. Sugar Crush exposes the shocking truth about how a diet high in sugar, processed carbohydrates, and wheat compresses and damages the peripheral nerves of the body, leading to pain, numbness, and tingling in the hands and feet, along with a host of related conditions, including migraines, gall bladder disease, and diabetes.
Over the years, Dr. Richard Jacoby has treated thousands of patients with peripheral neuropathy. Now, he shares his insights as well as the story of how he connected the dots to determine how sugar is the common denominator of many chronic diseases. In Sugar Crush, he offers a unique holistic approach to understanding the exacting toll sugar and carbs take on the body. Based on his clinical work, he breaks down his highly effective methods, showing how dietary changes reducing sugar and wheat, coinciding with an increase of good fats, can dramatically help regenerate nerves and rehabilitate their normal function.
Sugar Crush includes a quiz to assess your nerve damage, practical dietary advice, and the latest thinking on ways to prevent and reverse neuropathy. If you have diabetes, this essential guide will help you understand the dangers and give you the tools you need to make a difference beyond your doctor’s prescriptions. If you have the metabolic syndrome or prediabetes, or are just concerned about your health, it will help you reverse and prevent nerve damage.
Affecting 79 million Americans, prediabetes often develops into full-blown type 2 diabetes, one of the leading causes of death in the United States. Increasingly diagnosed by doctors, prediabetes is a condition in which blood sugar levels are elevated, but not yet high enough to be labeled diabetes. While diabetes cannot be cured, prediabetes can be reversed, so it is critical to take action at an early stage.
In straightforward, jargon-free language, The Prediabetes Diet Plan explains insulin resistance (the underlying cause of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes) and offers a comprehensive strategy of diet and lifestyle change, which has been proven more effective than medication. With sections on meal planning, grocery shopping, dining out, supplements, and exercise, this book empowers you to make healthier everyday choices that can effect real change on your insulin levels and overall well-being.
In this beautifully illustrated cookbook, you’ll find 65 delicious, healthy recipes for every day of the week, with ideas for both restricted and unrestricted days. On The 2-Day Diet you can enjoy filling, tasty food all day long - from breakfast through to dinner - and still lose more weight and up to twice as much fat as on a standard calorie-controlled diet. You will also benefit from a wide range of health benefits associated with the diet, such as reducing insulin and levels of other hormones and inflammation in the body known to cause cancer, lowering high blood pressure, and improving well-being, mood and energy levels.
Recipes for restricted days include:
- Stuffed tarragon chicken with bacon and roasted veg
- Chimichurri steak
- Spiced turkey burgers with guacamole
- Salmon with roasted fennel, leeks and tomatoes
- Blackberry frozen yoghurt
- Melon, mint and pineapple granita
With nutritionally balanced, easy-to-prepare and delicious recipes like these, along with tips, meal plans and a quick-reference guide to what to eat, The 2-Day Diet Cookbook shows you how to love food, lose weight and keep it off forever.

High blood pressure (hypertension) can lead to and make worse many complications of diabetes, including diabetic eye disease and kidney disease. Most people with diabetes develop high blood pressure during their life.
Having diabetes makes high blood pressure and other heart and circulation problems more likely because diabetes damages arteries and makes them targets for hardening (atherosclerosis). Atherosclerosis can cause high blood pressure, which if not treated, can lead to blood vessel damage, stroke, heart failure, heart attack, or kidney failure.
Three groups were studied with different diabetes interventions. The first was given education only. The second was on a weight loss program, increased physical activity, and had a decrease in consumption of salt and alcohol. The third had all the interventions of the first, but also were put on the dash diet. All three groups showed positive health changes, but only the one with the dash diet statistically increased insulin sensitivity.
The dash is a positive step in managing effects of diabetes in addition to the insulin sensitivity. This is because many people with diabetes have a higher risk of heart disease and stroke. Hypertension increases this risk, so a diet that decreases blood pressure will have the benefit of being a tool of prevention of other diseases in individuals with diabetes.
Develop your relationship with your medical provider and be sure to maintain contact about any questions, concerns or changes in your diabetes symptoms.
All the recipes also include detailed information on calories, fat, saturated fat, sodium, carbohydrates, Total sugars, protein, Dietary fiber, as well as serving sizes.
Few diabetes books focus specifically on the day-to-day issues facing people who use insulin. Blindness, kidney failure and death were all predicted for him by age twenty-five. Twenty-nine years later, not only is Phil alive and well but as the founder of Team Type 1, he and his team of championship cyclists — many of them diabetics—have become health and fitness role models for people the world over.
Together, they have taken on some of the most challenging endurance events in the world, including winning the Race Across America—a grueling 3,000-mile endurance competition—twice. Today, Phil continues to lead Team Type 1 as its professional cycling team, among one of the top 30 teams in the world, races toward an invite to the world's top cycling event, the Tour de France in 2012. Leading the pack is a serious challenge for any athlete, but for Phil and his teammates, it presents two daily battles: one to stay in razor-sharp race-fit condition, the other, to stay alive.
Not Dead Yet is Phil's powerful story: his account of his relationship with his mother, and how she struggled to keep him alive; growing up quickly in the New-Old South of the 1990s, learning at the tender age of 6 years old how to check his glucose and give himself injections; of how he fulfilled his dream of becoming a professional athlete using his team and the bike as a platform, inspiring thousands of individuals and families around the world who are battling diabetes to not just chase, but catch, their dreams.

Mary Tyler Moore, actress and activist, relates the highs and lows of living with type 1 diabetes for the past forty years. With inspired, well-crafted prose, she drills down to the most heartfelt, yet universal truths about life—including the lives of those with diabetes. She unflinchingly chronicles her struggle with diabetes, as well as her successful rehabilitation from alcohol dependence, all while deriving gratification from her roles as an actress, mother, businesswoman, campaigner, and fund-raiser. Her revealing tales of both her successes and failures in coping with diabetes offer others with the disease guidance and inspiration through example. In the book, stories include her rebounding from a low-blood-sugar episode during a Mary Tyler Moore Show script reading after the director poured orange juice down her throat, to misadventures caused by diabetes-related vision impairment at a dimly lit party for John Travolta.
She also taps into the vast diabetes research network to talk to diabetic children and adults and with leading experts who are discovering new ways to control diabetes and its complications, and pursuing new ways to cure this disease.
"Her TV alter ego, Mary Richards, may have been perfect, but it’s Moore’s imperfections that make her the ideal author of this surprisingly frank memoir about living with diabetes." - Publishers Weekly

Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States and often goes underreported as a cause of death. But the good news is that you can prevent, treat, and even reverse type 2 diabetes by eating well.
The Diabetes Cookbook offers 140 recipes that have been carefully developed and proportioned to help you control your blood sugar levels. Each recipe is low in saturated fat, added sugar and salt, with plenty of fruits and vegetables. The recipes also include a thorough analysis of key nutrients, plus diabetic exchanges. They are quick and easy to make, with budget-friendly and recipes for two called out. And, most importantly, they are delicious and satisfying. The book includes:

01. What is Blood Sugar?
The blood sugar (glucose) level is the amount of sugar (glucose) present in the blood of human or animals. When blood sugar (glucose) level rises too high, it's called hyperglycemia. When blood sugar (glucose) level drops too low, it's called hypoglycemia.
Basic Facts about Blood Sugar (Glucose) and Insulin:
Glucose (a simple sugar) is the primary source of energy for the cells of the body. Glucose comes from the foods (carbohydrates) we eat. Body converts the carbohydrates into sugar. It is also formed and stored inside the body.
After meals, adequate quantity of insulin hormone is automatically released by pancreas.
Blood carries the glucose from the intestines or liver to body cells.
Insulin makes it possible for cells to take in the glucose from blood. In other words, insulin helps absorption of glucose by cells.
Level of blood sugar starts dropping soon after it starts entering the cell.
Blood sugar levels fluctuate throughout the day.
MEASUREMENT OF BLOOD SUGAR
1. milligram/deciliter (mg/dL) -- Blood sugar is measured in milligram/deciliter.
2. millimols/litre (mmol/L) -- Blood sugar is also measured in millimols/liter (mmol/L). millimols/liter (mmol/L) is also called millimolars (mM)
Note: 1mmol/L is equivalent to 18 mg/dL.
3. DCCT HbA1c (%) -- Blood sugar levels over the last 3 months are measured through an A1C test. Findings are represented as a percentage. The range may fall in between 4-15%. Red blood cells in our body may last up to 3 months (or 12 weeks) before getting regenerated. Therefore, average of glycated hemoglobin in blood over 3 months is taken for discerning the average blood glucose level.
DCCT stands for Diabetes Control and Complications Trial
4. IFCC HbA1c (mmol/mol) -- Findings of A1C Test may also be represented in millimols/mole (mmol/mol).
IFCC stands for International Federation of Clinical Chemistry
NOTE: IFCC HBA1c (mmol/mol) = [DCCT HBA1c (%) - 2.15] * 10.929
WHAT IS HBA1C?
HbA1c Refers to Glycated hemoglobin. Glycated hemoglobin is measured to identify the average plasma glucose concentration over prolonged periods of time. Glucose molecules are inclined to attach to the hemoglobin in red blood cells and form the glycated hemoglobin
Lower levels of glucose produce a lower amount of glycated hemoglobin.
Normal levels of glucose produce a normal amount of glycated hemoglobin.
Higher levels of glucose produce a higher amount of glycated hemoglobin.
02. Different Stages of Blood Sugar
Blood sugar level in your body changes from day-to-day or moment-to-moment. Blood sugar depends on quantity and timing of food you have eaten. More importantly it depends on what you have eaten.
SITUATION 1: Fasting Glucose Level / Glucose Level Before Meals [Pre Prandial]
Following are the different ranges of blood sugar after 8-10 hours of fasting (generally before meals in the morning) in mg/dL, mmol/L, DCCT HbA1c (%) and IFFCC HbA1c (mmol/mol).
Low blood sugar --
Less than 70 mg/dL Or
Less than 3.9 mmol/L Or
Less than 4% DCCT HbA1c (%) Or
Less than 20.2% IFCC HbA1c (mmol/mol)
Normal blood sugar --
71 mg/dL to 99 mg/dL Or
3.9 mmol/L to 5.4 mmol/L Or
4.1% DCCT HbA1c (%) to 4.9% DCCT HbA1c (%) Or
20.3% IFCC HbA1c (mmol/mol) to 31.0% IFCC HbA1c (mmol/mol)
Above normal blood sugar --
100 mg/dL to 126 mg/dL Or
5.5 mmol/L to 7.0 mmol/L Or
5.0 DCCT HbA1c (%) to 5.7 DCCT HbA1c (%) Or
31.1 IFCC HbA1c (mmol/mol) to 38.8 IFCC HbA1c (mmol/mol)
High blood sugar --
127 mg/dL to 169 mg/dL Or
7.1 mmol/L to 9.4 mmol/L Or
5.8 DCCT HbA1c (%) to 6.9 DCCT HbA1c (%) Or
38.9 IFCC HbA1c (mmol/mol) to 51.9 IFCC HbA1c (mmol/mol)
