He has applied several times to the free Dragons (the most intelligent beings in any of the known universes) requesting that under the terms of the Unified Code, they locate the appropriate master of the occult arts and sciences. All the Free Dragons have done so far is assure him that his request is receiving their attention, but now Montmorency has found a way to get their urgent attention. He has hatched a fiendish plot to impose economic efficiency, modern management systems and spreadsheets on the land of Albion.
With the support of two evil and powerful noblemen he threatens to flood Albion with MBAs from the parallel world known as Earth Three-- a primitive, world where occult evolution has stalled. To ensure success, Montmorency has stolen the Ward of Summoning, an immensely potent occult artifact. There is now no way to stop him by conventional occult means.
The Free Dragons know Montmorency must be stopped, and because they never (well, hardly ever) interfere directly in human affairs they have called upon Albions most notorious band of adventurers, Mission Implausible, to do the job. The band would normally be assigned a mage-- an expert in the theory and practice of magic-- to deal with Montmorency. But because he has the Ward, the Free Dragons have decided to use more primitive means. They have arranged to transfer a mathematician from Earth Three to invoke the Summoner of Basingstoke, and stop Montmorencys scheme in its tracks.
Unfortunately even the Free Dragons are not totally infallible...
Thus it comes to pass that the totally non-mathematical Andrew Cruickshank, having gone to on sleep in a Cumbrian hotel on Earth Three on the eve of a climbing holiday, wakes up to find himself in a completely alien world, in possession of a lethally temperamental magicians staff, and in the company of five people who expect him to do magic on demand. His talents in that area have hitherto been limited to a few transparent card tricks, so the prospects appear unpromising. And his attempts to use Tarot 5.1, Albions industry-standard spell system, are catastrophically unpredictable. However it soon turns out he has other valuable talents...
With the help of these, and Mission Implausible?s robust, uncompromising approach to conflict resolution, the band of adventurers sweeps across Albion leaving confusion, destruction and broken glasses in their wake until they reach Basingstoke. There, deep in the bowels of the Basingstoke Old Peoples Community Centre and Bingo Hall, Andrew Cruickshank finds he must fight for his life against a lethal duellist before he can invoke the Summoner of Basingstoke...
MORE ABOUT ALBION
Albion is a small island nation in the north temperate zone. While it seems insignificant enough, not only is it home to a pugnacious, independent-minded people, it is also home to the Free Dragons. The Free Dragons are the wisest beings in any of the possible universes; they mastered the art and science of magic at about the time everybody else was sitting around waiting for the pleistocene era to get started. They live beneath the Mountains of Dark Crystal on Albions west coast, a location rigorously enough isolated to deter even the most determined political canvasser; the Free Dragons like their privacy.
Though they never (well, hardly ever) involve themselves in human affairs, they maintain informal contact with a number of Albions more senior occult professionals. The only reason the Free Dragons have not been adopted as gods is that they have never shown any interest whatsoever in turning people into stone, demanding human sacrifices, laying waste to whole cities, or c
As CEO of the worlds most successful outlaw band, Don Orlando should be laughing all the way to the bank, but hes not laughing today. An exiled duke, complete with toadies, minstrels and huntsmen has set up camp in the forest, just a short ride from outlaw headquarters, and thats the sort of thing that plays hell with the asset-redistribution business. And the busy seasons just about to begin. In desperation, Orlando turns to Mission Implausible, Albions premier adventure team. Its true that their appetite for beer and gratuitous violence is notoriously insatiable and its also true that Andrew Cruickshank, their mage, combines the efficiency of the postal service, the predictability of the weather and the destructive potential of a strategic nuclear weapon, but hell, what have you got to lose? Quite a bit, actually.
While Cruickshank studies the Shakespeare play As You Like It for clues on how to get rid of exiled dukes, his Designated Opposite, the black mage Montmorency arrives on the scene and begins to start stirring things up. As if that were not enough, Titus Handcarte, the First Speaker of East Castellian, wants to put Don Orlando out of business by establishing a Rural Roistering Experience in the outlaws forest and has persuaded usurping Duke Roger to spearhead this operation.
Things do not look good for Don Orlando, caught between an exiled duke on one side, and a usurping duke backed by East Castellians army on the other. But Mission Implausible is up to the challenge. They can, and do, call upon gratuitous violence, improbable disguises, forgery, blackmail, dubious transvestite rituals, shameless piracy of Shakespearean plots and occult incompetence. Handcarte, usurping Duke Roger and exiled Duke Frederick dont stand a chance, especially when Montmorency is persuaded to lend his formidable occult and diplomatic skills.
We will soon be able to meet and exceed the basic needs of every man, woman and child on the planet. Abundance for all is within our grasp. This bold, contrarian view, backed up by exhaustive research, introduces our near-term future, where exponentially growing technologies and three other powerful forces are conspiring to better the lives of billions. An antidote to pessimism by tech entrepreneur turned philanthropist, Peter H. Diamandis and award-winning science writer Steven Kotler.
Since the dawn of humanity, a privileged few have lived in stark contrast to the hardscrabble majority. Conventional wisdom says this gap cannot be closed. But it is closing—fast. The authors document how four forces—exponential technologies, the DIY innovator, the Technophilanthropist, and the Rising Billion—are conspiring to solve our biggest problems. Abundance establishes hard targets for change and lays out a strategic roadmap for governments, industry and entrepreneurs, giving us plenty of reason for optimism.
Examining human need by category—water, food, energy, healthcare, education, freedom—Diamandis and Kotler introduce dozens of innovators making great strides in each area: Larry Page, Steven Hawking, Dean Kamen, Daniel Kahneman, Elon Musk, Bill Joy, Stewart Brand, Jeff Skoll, Ray Kurzweil, Ratan Tata, Craig Venter, among many, many others.
A radical, how-to guide for using exponential technologies, moonshot thinking, and crowd-powered tools, Bold unfolds in three parts. Part One focuses on the exponential technologies that are disrupting today’s Fortune 500 companies and enabling upstart entrepreneurs to go from “I’ve got an idea” to “I run a billion-dollar company” far faster than ever before. The authors provide exceptional insight into the power of 3D printing, artificial intelligence, robotics, networks and sensors, and synthetic biology. Part Two draws on insights from billionaires such as Larry Page, Elon Musk, Richard Branson, and Jeff Bezos and reveals their entrepreneurial secrets. Finally, Bold closes with a look at the best practices that allow anyone to leverage today’s hyper-connected crowd like never before. Here, the authors teach how to design and use incentive competitions, launch million-dollar crowdfunding campaigns to tap into tens of billions of dollars of capital, and finally how to build communities—armies of exponentially enabled individuals willing and able to help today’s entrepreneurs make their boldest dreams come true.

This book has been written in response to the continuing need for information on earth shelters. Though many books on these new buildings have appeared in recent years, most of them have been "how-to" books--many of them long on photographs and short on detailed discussion of the basic variables that play a most important role in the success of the designs. This volume presents a comprehensive technical view of the problems involved for building science professionals, including students of architecture, working architects, building contractors, and engineers, as well as the informed lay public.
Boyer and Grondzik discuss and interrelate such earth shelter design concepts as passive solar heating, daylighting, and hazard protection for all regions and climates, at the same time evaluating shelter performance in terms of comfort and habitability, cooling and heating effectiveness, and levels of protection. In addition, they present the proper use of various construction and waterproofing techniques in relation to climate, characteristics of the site, and other regional factors. The text encourages a system approach to design to allow the builder to achieve a house with outstanding performance.
Readers will find the list of references provided particularly useful as a guide to further study of specific design features or problems. More than 120 supporting tables, charts, and other illustrations add clarifying information to the text.
In compiling this comprehensive introduction to earth shelter design, the authors have used the evaluations provided by occupants of earth shelters, measurement and long-term studies of specific earth shelters, and various prediction models and methods as well as a thorough study of the literature on the subject. Although the text deals largely with residential applications, significant attention is also given to select nonresidential examples

Construction Management and Civil Engineering students and professionals alike will find everything they need, to understand and to master construction project management in this classic guide.
Drs. Forbes and Ahmed focus mainly on lean construction methodologies, such as The Last Planner(R) System, The Lean Project Delivery System (TM), and Integrated Project Delivery(TM). The tools and strategies offered draw on the success of the world-renowned Toyota Production System (TPS) adapted to the construction environment by construction professionals and researchers involved in developing and advocating lean construction methods. The book also discusses why true lean construction can best occur when all the construction stakeholders, owners, designers, constructors, and material suppliers are committed to the concept of optimizing the flow of activities holistically while de-emphasizing their self-interest.
The authors also reintroduce process improvement approaches such as TQM and Six Sigma as a foundation for the adoption of lean methodologies, and demonstrate how these methods can improve projects in a so-called traditional environment. The book integrates these methods with emerging interest in "green construction" and the use of information technology and Building Information Modeling (BIM), while recognizing the human element in relation to motivation, safety, and environmental stresses. Written specifically for professionals in an industry that desperately needs to play catch up, the book delineates cutting-edge approaches with the benefit of successful cases and explains how their deployment can improve construction performance and competitiveness.
Review of the Department of Defense Test Protocols for Combat Helmets considers the technical issues relating to test protocols for military combat helmets. At the request of the DOD Director of Operational Test and Evaluation, this report evaluates the adequacy of the Advanced Combat Helmet test protocol for both first article testing and lot acceptance testing, including its use of the metrics of probability of no penetration and the upper tolerance limit (used to evaluate backface deformation). The report evaluates appropriate use of statistical techniques in gathering data; adequacy of current helmet testing procedures; procedures for the conduct of additional analysis of penetration and backface deformation data; and scope of characterization testing relative to the benefit of the information obtained.

Topic-based chapters link areas of working practice – such as cables, installations, testing and inspection, special locations – with the specifics of the Regulations themselves. This allows quick and easy identification of the official requirements relating to the situation in front of you.
The requirements of the regulations, and of related standards, are presented in an informal, easy-to-read style that strips away confusion. Packed with useful hints and tips, and highlighting the most important or mandatory requirements, this book is a concise reference on all aspects of the 17th edition IEE Wiring Regulations.
In many cities across the world, particularly in Europe, old buildings form a prominent part of the built environment, and we often take it for granted that their contribution is intrinsically positive. How has that widely-shared belief come about, and is its continued general acceptance inevitable?
Certainly, ancient structures have long been treated with care and reverence in many societies, including classical Rome and Greece. But only in modern Europe and America, in the last two centuries, has this care been elaborated and energised into a forceful, dynamic ideology: a ‘Conservation Movement’, infused with a sense of historical destiny and loss, that paradoxically shared many of the characteristics of Enlightenment modernity. The close inter-relationship between conservation and modern civilisation was most dramatically heightened in periods of war or social upheaval, beginning with the French Revolution, and rising to a tragic climax in the 20th-century age of totalitarian extremism; more recently the troubled relationship of ‘heritage’ and global commercialism has become dominant.
Miles Glendinning’s new book authoritatively presents, for the first time, the entire history of this architectural Conservation Movement, and traces its dramatic fluctuations in ideas and popularity, ending by questioning whether its recent international ascendancy can last indefinitely.
Three main sections – Producing a Proposal, Executing the Research and Reporting the Results discuss the key issues in research and examine the primary approaches, both qualitative and quantitative. The methods adopted for scientific and engineering experiments, model building and simulations are discussed, as well as those employed for research into management, social and economic issues. The authors examine the requirements for data and analysis, including the important statistical considerations and a range of qualitative techniques that enable construction researchers to appreciate what needs to be evaluated in devising how research may be carried out effectively and efficiently.
This new edition has been updated to reflect current debates and concerns, including ethical issues, legislation and codes of practice concerning the collection, processing, storage, use and disposal of data. Pressures of time and funding to carry out the empirical work all too often lead to a lack of attention to how the study should be done and why. The authors address the importance of explaining the philosophical approach adopted (ontology, epistemology) and the consequent methodology. They advocate close scrutiny of the methods available for appropriateness, both academically and practically.
The fundamental theme of the book remains to facilitate a researcher’s informed and justified selection of a philosophical paradigm and of appropriate methods to execute the research.
The reader is guided through each of the key areas and processes in the field, with additional emphasis placed on Health & Safety. Written by the author of the CITB/City & Guilds Level 2 Technical Certificate, the book fully covers the syllabus requirements for the Intermediate Construction Award (painting and decorating route) and the Decorative Occupations NVQ at Level 2.
Readers will find the topic Colour in Decoration – a critical aspect of actual painting and decorating practice – is also addressed, making this essential reading for Modern Apprentices in the trade, as well as serving as a useful reference for qualified painters and decorators.
The book is designed to maximise accessibility of the text for the reader. Activities, key points, and ‘test your knowledge’ questions (for use during college/centre training), feature throughout the text to allow application of theory into practical contexts. An additional answer section at the back of the book aids self-assessment, enabling the reader to revise all key concepts that have been introduced.
