Seven rules is an unusually theological work coming out of the Donatist church in North Africa. This is not a list of monastic rules, which would have been common for the period. Nor is it a list of moral precepts that should be obeyed by the faith. Instead this is a mystical treatise dealing with the nature of Christ's body, the presence of the devil in the world, and the utility of the scriptures. Among Ticonius' seven primary theses, he voices his believe in a textually literal reading of the Book of Revelation of St. John, and a cyclical understanding of the happenings therein.

This work, by the Carthaginian bishop, Capreolus, dictates some of the concerns and trepidations that the church in North Africa had during the time of the Ecumenical council at Ephesus. Since the African church's luminary, St. Augustine of Hippo (d. 430), had passed a few years prior, there is a gap in the historic record of how the African bishops perceived Imperial ordinances and the political fiasco that was the tenure of Nestorius as patriarch of Constantinople.

This work, frequently misattributed to St. Augustine of Hippo, is a biblical exegesis of the problem of pain and civil collapse. This theme is not arising out of a cultural vacuum. Our author, the 5th century bishop of Carthage, was captured by the Vandal tribesman under King Gaiseric, a devout Arian. By luck or providence he was able to negotiate his deportation to Roman Italy, and avoid a death sentence. This work appears to be the psychological response to the political chaos of North Africa at the time.

In 345, the bishop of Carthage, Gratus, held a synod of Catholic bishops in the region. They met to make note of their gratitude for the Imperially supported repression of the Circumcelliones (Donatists) churches, who had been an ecclesiastical issue for the last two decades. The synod made an official declaration against the re-baptism of anyone who had been baptized in the name of the Trinity, and adopted twelve canons of clerical discipline.

The fourth synod of the church at Carthage was conducting dealing with some minor liturgical matters that were persistent in the Punic church. The primary issue cited was the clear teaching regarding the nature of the Christian Trinity. Additionally, there was some concern regarding the role of the bishop and the act of excommunication, particularly those who involved themselves in Arianism and Donatism.

The 5th Council of Carthage, which met on the 28th of August, 397 AD reaffirmed the canons of prior Synod of Hippo Regius from four years earlier. Among other issues, it sought to clarify the question of the Christian Biblical Canon, and what that entailed, something that would not be revisited by the Western Church until the time of the Reformation.

During his time with the Manicheans, St. Augustine went into depth regarding their theological suppositions about the nature of the world and the natural mortality of the human soul. As strict dualists, the Manicheans rejected the more familiar Platonic speculation of the soul, insisting on a two-faceted soul. What little is known about Manichean religious thought, which is a defunct world religion, is eloquently described here and in similar texts by St. Augustine.

Blossius Aemilius Dracontius offers a legal apology via his own prose for his religious dispute the Arian king of the Vandals. This texts offers a rare insight into late Roman North African from the eyes of a common resident of Carthage. Little is known of the fate of Dracontius. However, he is known to have been released or escaped for the Vandal jail and made his way to freedom in Northern Italy.

This dialogue, On the Happy Life (De beata vita), is an early text of the North African church father, St. Augustine of Hippo. It stands at the end of a long tradition of philosophical inquiry devoted to the question which way of life leads to happiness (eudaimonia). For Augustine this question is sentinel to his life's journey and he seeks to incorporate Neoplatonism thought into his conclusions. This text also gives rare insight into his personal life and is one of the first texts to make reference to a 'birthday' in the western world.

Adda, also referenced in Latin as Adimantus, was one of Mani's earliest followers and an exegentical writer commenting on the Greek scriptures and Mani's psalms. The preliminary diffusion of Mani's revelation into the late Roman empire was advocated by his disciple Adda, which St. Augustine would have been familiar with from his time among them as an acolyte. This polemic by St. Augustine would help clarify both the Catholic position in response to Manichean claims, but also help to extinguish the religion amongst intellectual circles in the West. Moreover, the questions posed by Adda about challenges to thew Hebrew Scriptures by the Manicheans would be preserved here for posterity, even as the religion of Mani would totally disappear from the world's religious landscape.

The second synod of Mileum appealed to Pope Innocent I for a large scale repression of the Pelagian heresy, which was still strongly present in various cities in the African diocese. Sixty-one bishops of the Numidian church were in attendance to address heterodoxy that was still present in their churches. Among the various attendees was the famed churchmen St. Augustine, bishop of the city of Hippo Regius, along with retinue, all of whom were responding to the larger metropolitan church synod held in Carthage this same year.

The synod held at the Romano-Punic city of Zella (also known as Tella or Teleptense) in the 5th century sought to establish some sense of clarity over episcopal authority within the African church. Some concerns were noted related to baptism and military service, and most notably the relationship that the orthodox Catholic church should have with the Montanists and Novatianists who were still active in the area at the time.

This work is composed by the African church father, Vigilius, against Palladius of Ratiaria, the 4th century Arian Christian theologian.In 381 AD, he was deposed from his office, together with Secundianus of Singidunum, at the Council of Aquileia, because of his Christological views. He had appealed to Theodosius, the emperor of the east, for intervention and to support the Arianist cause. This proved to be fruitless politically. Palladius' own writings are lost, but this polemic against his claims has survived to the present day.

The Vandal king Huneric was a devout Arian, and interfered with ecclesiastical affairs during his reign as king over north africa. The Arian attacks on the catholic monasteries in the region, caused a tremendous amount of tumult, including that of the young monk Fulgentius, who would spar with the Arians in the region over the next few decade. This included disputing the episcopacy of Ruspe, which any catholic was banned by royal edict from occupying. Laid out here, Fulgentius, delineates his polemic against the African Arians and their doctrinal arguments.

By the 11th century much of former Roman North Africa had declined to the point where the African Romantic language was in massive decline, as the various episcopal sees in the region had been reduced under the last three centuries of Arab hegemony. Pope Leo IX wrote two letters to the archbishopric of Carthage in 1053 determining their status, and offering his congratulations regarding a synod that been held a few years prior. These two letters represent the last contact noted with any Latin church in North Africa before it permanently disappeared in the 12th century.

Of this collection, there are two letters where interrogates Fulgence, bishop of Ruspe, and five others, some very long, which are short treatises on theology. Documents from Christian churches in North Africa are rare following the Arab conquest in 699 AD. What survives is a handful of letters relating to churches and local Arab authorities which cast some insight into the state of the African church during the height of the Caliphate. These documents are few and far between and are largely of Italian origin. The papacy attempted to remain active in the affairs of Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco throughout the Medieval period until the arrival of the Spanish and Portuguese missions during the 15th century.
