Arnold Bennett

Arnold Bennett, born in Hanley, Staffordshire in 1867, into a working-class family was a highly acclaimed English novelist, playwright, journalist and cultural commentator, widely regarded as one of the most successful and influential writers of the early twentieth century. The Pretty Lady (1918) is a notable novel set in London during World War I, showcasing his ability to explore complex social themes such as sexuality, social hypocrisy and the moral dislocation of the home front. Originally trained as a Solicitor's clerk, Bennett turned decisively toward literature after winning a literary competition in 1889. During World War I, Bennett contributed to the British War Propaganda Bureau, an experience that shaped his understanding of the war's psychological and social consequences. By the time of his death in 1931, he had established himself not only as a chronicler of English provincial life but also as a keen observer of modern society in transition.
