Robert Bickers was educated in Britain, Hong Kong, Germany and Taiwan, a research fellow at both Oxford and Cambridge universities and is currently Professor of History at Bristol University where he directs the university's Hong Kong History Centre. A Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, he has published extensively on Chinese history and is the author of Empire Made Me which won the American Historical Association's Morris D. Forkosch Prize; The Scramble for China; Out of China which was shortlisted for the 2018 Wolfson Prize for History; and China Bound, a finalist for the 2022 Hagley Prize for Business History. Robert has been invited to talk at public events in Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing and other forums internationally. He directs the 'Historical Photographs of China' online platform, which has a quarter of a million unique users annually.
