Ted Prior was born in 1945 in Sydney, Australia. He is a former policeman. He studied at the National Art School in Sydney, earning a diploma in Painting. He then taught at the National Art School in New Castle for three years. He writes and illustrates children's books and is best known for his children's series featuring the character Grug. The first book, Grug, was published in 1979. Some books in the series are Grug, Grug and the Circus, Grug Learns to Fly, Grug and his Imaginary Friend, and Grug and His First Easter. He works in a variety of mediums and his work has been seen in individual and group exhibitions.
