«Because the film, set as the others in the Nazi Germany, focuses on a less-known, but still controversial aspect: the one concerning euthanasia programs for minors and disabled people. Inspired by a true story, it underlines the universal importance of respect for other people’s life and the dangerousness of dehumanizing ideologies willing to manipulate life in a selective way. The screenplay does not portray the easy scheme dividing good characters from evil characters, on the contrary it highlights human fragility, always victim of the 'Banality of Evil'. The most thoughtful meanings are conveyed by a direction enhancing young actors interpretation and expressiveness, also through essential dialogue and a measured use of evocative sound. Thanks to the striking contrast between the indoor and outdoor cold-and-hot chromatic tones, a climate of tragedy appears, leaving nevertheless a narrow opening for hope.»
