A wealthy family patriarch dies, leaving shares of his valuable farm to different members of his family. His son, Ferdinando (Paul Frankeur), seeks to buy all the shares in order to regain control of the farm. Amerigo (Jean-Paul Belmondo), Ferdinando's nephew, refuses to sell, and moves to Florence, Italy, instead. But, when he falls in love with a prostitute (Claudia Cardinale) and spends all his money supporting her, Amerigo may be forced to sell and face disgrace.
