Margaret Delafield (Katharine Hepburn) is a wealthy widow who endures a health scare and develops a close bond with her doctor, Marvin Elias (Harold Gould). When they begin a romance, families on both sides balk at the possibility of marriage between the older couple. Margaret's sons, Horton (David Ogden Stiers) and Chipper (Charles Frank), are especially disapproving, partly because Marvin is Jewish. Margaret remains undaunted, however, and presses forward with their plans to marry.
