Potem ko se jedrska podmornica skrivnostno potopi v oddaljenem delu oceanskega dna, ekipo potapljačev na prototipu podvodne naftne ploščadi ameriška mornarica prisili v poskus reševanja. Ko orkan prekine stik med površjem in podvodnimi globinami, posadka posumi na obstoj čudne, mogoče nezemeljske inteligence. Medtem ko se načelnik Bud Brigman (Ed Harris) prepira s svojo bivšo ženo in šefico (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio), poveljnik mornarice postane vse bolj paranoičen glede skrivnostnega nezemeljskega življenja in grozi, da bo uporabil najdeno jedrsko orožje, da bi vse uničil.

Don't get scammed by Google. The original movie is 140 minutes. The Abyss Special Edition that was just released 12/2023 is 2 h 50 m. Google is selling this at full price and using the special edition cover (Bait and switch) to mislead people. Prime is the only place to get the right version. They are the only ones contracted to offer it. Sad part their version is UHD not true 4k and its 19.95.

Google is getting pretty incompetent when it comes to media sales — THE ABYSS is a Movies Anywhere title (20th Century Studios, owned by Disney) but the flag isn’t set despite MA including Google TV in the retailers list. Trying to sort this out with support led to an hour spent getting frustrated at the obviously AI support chatbot (which got shirty on being called out) and my decision to request a refund.

A unique film from James Cameron, the story is long and somewhat simple but still good and the movie itself is a masterclass in filmmaking. There is not another movie that equals the scale of the Abyss' underwater setting.
