In a small town in Oklahoma, in the early 1920s, a seemingly ideal family confronts challenges that face every family ... everywhere in the world. On the day that Rubin Flood (Robert Preston) loses his job, his daughter, Reenie (Shirley Knight) discovers young love for the first time. Rather than talk to his long-neglected wife, Cora (Dorothy McGuire), Rubin goes to Mavis (Angela Lansbury), for whom he has lusted for years. And Reenie, deliriously enamored with Sammy Golden (Lee Kinsolving) experiences the pain of bigotry when they are asked to leave a country club dance because Sammy's name is Jewish. Now, through the pain of newly revealed truth, Rubin and Cora must find a way to rebuild their life--as, together, they face The Dark at the Top of the Stairs.
