젊고 유능한 은행 간부 앤디는 부인과 그녀의 정부를 살해했다는 죄목으로 두 번의 종신형을 선고 받고 쇼생크 교도소에 수감된다. 감옥에서 그는 흑인 레 드를 만나게 되고 서로 가까워진다. 폭력적인 감옥에 나름대로 적응해가며 생 활해 가고 있던 어느날 감옥 밖에서 건물 지붕 보수공사에 앤디와 레드를 비 롯한 동료들이 착출되게 되고 우연히 그의 재능을 살려 간수에게 세금 감면에 대한 조언을 해주고 그 대가로 맥주를 동료에게 선물한다. 이후 그는 감옥 내 도서관에서 일하게 되고 간수들의 세금정산을 도와준다. 오랜 기간동안 그는 제법 구색을 갖춘 도서관도 만들고 아름다운 음악을 죄수들에게 들려주 는 등 변화를 모색한다. 하지만 신참에게서 들은 자신의 무죄를 입증할 만한 이야기를 간수에게 하자 간수는 그 신참을 살해하는데...
