De schijnwerpers staan volop op Washington Heights gericht. De geur van cafecito caliente hangt in de lucht vlak naast het metrostation van 181st Street, waar een caleidoscoop aan dromen de levendige en hechte gemeenschap voedt. In het middelpunt van dit alles bevindt zich de aardige, magnetische kruidenier Usnavi (Anthony Ramos), die elk dubbeltje spaart terwijl hij hoopt op (en fantaseert en zingt over) een beter leven.
