Sam Mendes, the Oscar®-winning director of Skyfall, Spectre and American Beauty, brings his singular vision to this World War I epic. At the height of the First World War, two young British soldiers, Schofield (Captain Fantastic's George MacKay) and Blake (Game of Thrones' Dean-Charles Chapman), are given a seemingly impossible mission. In a race against time, they must cross enemy territory and deliver a message that will stop a deadly attack on hundreds of soldiers-Blake's own brother among them.

When I was first told about 1917, seeing people say it was perhaps better than Saving Private Ryan (SPR), I was a bit curious as to how. Would that be possible to portray war even better than the 1998 film? What I was expecting going into this was a movie similar to SPR, fair amount of action, some drama, some thrills. However, I was graced with something different, but something (as told) truly better. What this movie isn't is an action, war movie. What this movie is, is a stunning, snagged by the hand, gut lugging film! Unlike SPR, you are brought to the field with the protagonists. You are brought down to their world to experience one of the most ferocious wars. While SPR captured WW2 very well from a third person's perspective, 1917 captures the WW1 runner's struggles, the personal quest of self-survival, and the main objective of delivery. 1917, while it was less active and explosive than SPR, it made up for it with stunning cinematography, ungodly suspense, and it's "ghosting" effect. Taking the viewer by the hand, by force, and submerging you into the war.The environment of no-mans land was breathtaking and devastating. From the rot to the penciled trees. A slow transition of entering the untouched (or aftermath of a retreat) battlegrounds compliments the flow of the movie! And it's soundtrack doesn't leave you with numb or bored ears. Unbelievable work of music and sound effects! Look no further for an outstanding, WW1, engaging, and beautifully paced movie!

I watched this on a streaming service and it was great. Heavy focus on the torment of a single soldier tasked with a messenger service and what he went through to complete his objective. A bit predictable it amazing acting and camera work, the sets are amazing. Also $2 cheaper at the Microsoft store

Great film! Accurate to the times too. It was shot to look like one shot. Actors did great too. 100% recommended by me! It’s R rated for swearing and a little blood. Glad to see there was no sexual content.
