In a time when celebrity chef's are front and center, 42 Grams digs deep into the real world struggle of one of many chef's that take the true risk and follow what is in their heart. True, real life storytelling shines in Jack C. Newell's intimate take in this highly engaging, well thought-out documentary. Timing is everything and from the moment the title hits the screen until the credits roll, every bit of the story is laid out perfectly, even with a somewhat surprise ending. The music score is also something that stands out and is craftily used, not only in the background, but to emphasize with well timed edits throughout the film. If you have ANY interest in foodie culture (or are a fan of Anthony Bourdain's "Kitchen Confidential"), don't hesitate; watch!

Watching people cook is not enough these days. With a plethora of cooking shows, blogs, articles and contest shows, food has become less of a mystery than any form of art in the world. But this film isn't a cooking movie. Its a documentary about the American Dream and the audacity it takes to achieve it. If you need a healthy dose of "It can be done" watch this and be inspired.

Intimate portrait, warts and all, of a top chef. Sharp direction that tells the story similarly to how the chef composes dishes.
