This is classic Terence Mallick. Subtle, gracious, and bittersweet. An elegant tribute to a couple giving each other freedom to live by their convictions and paying the ultimate price. Don't watch if you have a short attention span or you are looking for a slick empty feel- good experience. This is story art with excellent performances.

This films small number of reviews bewilders me. This Tarkvosky-esque film by Terrence Malick by all mechanical accounts... directing, writing, cinematography and acting, is virtually flawless. A complex psycho-emotional story about an exceedingly important and broadly relevant morality question for all humanity. Give it the time and it will reward you with real depth. Why did I have to dig for this film?... It obviously had a big budget (used exceptionally well...) and a compelling subject matter, won awards at Cannes and the National board of review.

We did not like this movie at all. There are not many movies we don't watch to the end but this was one. I couldn't watch anymore. Too slow, story very jerky and disjointed. I would not recommend.
