English Lady

This movie is a guilty pleasure for me: perhaps its a touch of nostalgia for my teenage years when it was made. Truly, I loved some of the characters, including Paul Bettany's Chaucer, and Will's ragtag bunch of men, and its a fun story, with some great touches of British sense of humour. So why the rating? The main reason is that the movie reminds me of a Middle-Aged parent trying their best to be 'cool' in front of their teenage kid, and failing, quite miserably. The rock music and modern 'touches' just come over as tacky, clumsy, and cheesy. Also, I could not get on with ther heroine. She just came over as vapid shallow, selfish and not remotely Ladylike. She just spent most of the movie sitting around in hideous hats making unrealistic demands or whingeing. I cannot understand what the hero saw in her: Certainly not her fashion sense. her costumes were not just unattractive, but absurd. I almost wish the hero ended up with Kate or her maid. Both had more personality.
