Über diesen Film

In this comedy adventure, Robert Redford & Nick Nolte star as old friends who make the improbable decision to hike the 2,190-mile Appalachian Trail, and that's when the fun begins. Based on Bill Bryson's bestseller, the movie co-stars Emma Thompson, Mary Steenburgen, Nick Offerman & Kristen Schaal.

Boring story line and the AT was the only thing that kept me interested even though most of the extras/actors they encountered on the trail were all very unrealistic. For a story that was supposedly based on a true story, not much in this film was very believable. This movie was poorly made and could have been done so much better. There are hundreds of much better stories about the AT, especially from many thru-hikers that actually completed the entire trail that you could have gotten a better story from. OVERALL VERY DISAPPOINTING!

No real rise or fall to the plot. This movie just kind of plods along. The best parts of this movie are the glimpses of the Appalachian Trail life and some of the scenery. I loved the book, but this movie was very mediocre. Two of my favorite aspects of the book were the detailed descriptions of the characters that they met along the trail, and various statistics and science facts that Bill Bryson likes to sprinkle throughout his writings. When you see these characters in the movie they are glossed over. The movie doesn't do them justice. And while they sprinkled a couple interesting science tidbits here and there, they were few and far between. In the end it comes down to a matter of the medium. I don't think it's the actors' or writer's fault -- this story is just better left in print.

I read the book 10 years ago, and it really stuck with me. I think knowing the book helped me appreciate the movie more, Bryson's a good writer. If I hadn't read the book, i might have felt I didn't know the characters as well, since the movie's more about the journey and not the characters. The book fills in loads more detail, but that's expected. The actors are well cast and good performances all around. The real star is the Appalachian Trail.
