Bombay-based Subir Kumar (Amitabh Bachchan) is a famous pop singer, thronged by female fans, some even proposing marriage to him. However, Subir is not certain that marriage is for him, that is, until he meets a simple, young woman named Uma (Jaya Bachchan) and falls for her. Post their wedding and return to Bombay, he announces that Uma and he will professionally sing together. Uma rapidly climbs the ladder of success, surpassing Subir's popularity. Subir is unable to accept that his wife is more sought after by the showbiz industry and the audiences than he is, which leads to ugly conflicts between the couple.
