Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) is a Wall Street yuppie, obsessed with success, status and style, with a stunning fiancee (Reese Witherspoon). He is also a psychotic killer who rapes, murders and dismembers both strangers and acquaintances without provocation or purpose. Transgressional fiction reaches its apex with American Psycho. Bret Easton Ellis' gory satire could have so easily been completely misunderstood and presented as a horror film. This couldn't be farther away from that genre. In fact, she translates the two MOST horrific characters in the book, Phil Collins and Huey Lewis and the News, with subtlety and class that epitomize the gory, gruesome, genteel 80s.
