Het verhaal speelt zich af in Engeland in de jaren 1840. Mary Anning (Kate Winslet) is een beruchte paleontologe die naar een plek aan de kust gestuurd wordt. Daar krijgt ze de zorg over de jonge Charlotte (Saoirse Ronan) die weer op krachten moet zien te komen. Aanvankelijk botst het tussen hen, tot de twee een sterke band ontwikkelen. Het is een band die hun levens voorgoed zal veranderen.
