Great film about living in a small Texas town and finding the strength to move on. As someone who grew up in a small Texas town, this film nails that specific sense of place. The story, like country folk, takes its time, and has a stillness to it reminiscent of an August afternoon in the Hill County. Conversations are full of pauses and silent gestures, and outdoor scenes are set to the music of summer cicadas. Change is the central tension of the film. Change and one's reaction to it. The movie takes place in the rural farming community of Paget, Texas. The townsfolk live ghostly lives that seem at the same time long gone and frozen in time. Past victories are still recounted with pride, traditions are revered, and new neighbors are a threat to the town's very soul. Jack is no different. Jack was a child prodigy at piano and town hero, destined to leave Paget for Carnegie Hall. But things didn't work out. Years later, Jack still lives in Paget, albeit alone on the edge of town. Jack refuses to acknowledge his present circumstances, and pines for the past, back when anything was still possible. This film acknowledges one of life's harder realities: sometimes talent and hard work just aren't enough. Sometimes potential dies on the vein, and the path you've chosen suddenly dead-ends. This movie is about Jack's struggle to accept the past, acknowledge the present, and brave an uncertain future. As Far as the Eye Can See is a profoundly real story, and I loved it. Highly recommend.
