Coming from someone who has played a number of the Assassin's Creed games, I can tell you this is a disgrace to the franchise. The story while following standard protocol for a subject of the animus, is poorly told. The fight scenes are done horribly, you would be much better entertained watching parkour videos on youtube. The characters are all poorly developed over the course of the film. While the games spent far more time in the animus developing the characters of the past, this film sees fit to spend as little time as possible in the past. It only visits for fight scenes which are extremely jarring, epileptic and constantly flip flop back to the present with Fassbender acting out the fight scenes attached to a giant vending machine claw. The animus of the games functioned more like a pod from the matrix. This would have been ok as a one or two time thing but it is nonstop throughout the entire movie. Even viewed as a standalone film not part of a franchise, it is still horrible.

Positives: The movie is beautiful as far as costumes and set designs. The stunts are impressive and well-shot and getting an in-depth look at how the Animus works was, as a fan of the games, a great joy. Negatives: The main problem is the story as it isn't fleshed out or gripping. It simply goes from point A to point B with no real effort or even character development, which is kind of critical. Also 90% of the movie takes place in the present. You have no emotional connection to the Assassin because very little time is spent with him and the characters that you do spend time with aren't very likeable. Another point is the color pallet of the movie is muted, the present being dimly lit and quite drab while the past is excessively smoky with either dust or ash constantly blowing in front of the camera. And the locations are not nearly as vibrant or lush as the trailers seemed to depict. To sum it up, there are some exciting elements to Assassin's Creed but nothing you haven't seen before. I'm glad I saw it just out of curiosity, but it is not one I would ever buy.

Characters in this movie act illogically. One side tries to retrieve an artifact and another originally has it in their possession, has no use for it and wants to prevent the other side from getting it. They could have just destroyed it, or tossed it in the middle of the ocean in a lead box or something. The other side is as illogical as the first. Their only hope of finding the artefact is one guy. So they place him in a facility with people whose life mission it is to prevent the artifact from being found and give them access to a few weapons. Their security is also so lax, they let their guys walk in their own convention wearing enemy uniforms. The artifact supposedly contains a piece of technology that can really be used in the 21th, maybe late 20th century. If 15th century people tried to make sense out of it, I think they would just waste a lot of time and effort. This is the most illogical movie I have seen ever.
