Neil (John Lithgow) and Wendy Scott (Mary Beth Hurt) are a married couple anticipating the imminent birth of their first child. Wendy, who has only just reached the second trimester of her pregnancy, is suddenly rushed to the hospital for an emergency delivery. Though the Scotts' baby girl is successfully delivered, chances for her survival appear grim, a fact the doctors and hospital staff seem all too eager to ignore, as they encourage the Scotts to pursue expensive experimental treatments.
