On the surface, it's not very good and relies heavily on flashy CGI to keep attention - it's not very realistic, with shockingly unprofessional portrayals of the Navy and poor use of tactics. There is however another level - if you take the film as a contemporary analysis and commentary of modern society and military it suddenly becomes a lot more interesting. The easiest way to see this is in the Aliens military tactics - they employ "our" techniques and strategies for dealing with a foreign culture, such as the current actions in the middle east: overwhelming advanced technology with a policy of minimizing collateral damage and proceeding purely in a reactionary measure, i.e. only engaging those who demonstrate hostile intent and restraining the force used appropriately. It seems very clear that Battleship is a reflection on the Western World's military actions ranging from the Korean War and onwards with many actions that can clearly be linked to corresponding real world events and ethics. This was solidified within my mind at the cuing of the end music - the choice of "Fortunate Son" by CCR is either just a random fit or a brilliant choice, rocketing Battleship upwards.

But that is about it. I kept wishing my tablet would split-screen so I could do Sudoku at the same time. Acting is poor, story line makes no sense. The Alien are so violent and deadly when they attack, it doesn't seem plausible (if anything in this movie does) that they wouldn't kill everyone on sight instead of only if they were a threat.

It's the best way to sum up what is an all American one-man-saves-the-planet-again movie. The CG is nice and I think the aliens look quite good but the moment you realise they are actually playing Battleships on a Destroyer vs aliens is a sad moment which later in the movie topped of with another good round of patriotism when the veterans get involved. If you want a film to watch then it is a film but it's not a good one, there are however worse ways to pass time.
