This is a highly underrated film. It is refined and enigmatic. Nicole Kidman gives one of her finest performances as Anna, the tragic heroine of Birth, an autumnal, romantic mystery. The score by Alexandre Desplat is unforgettable. Nine years before his other masterpiece, Under the Skin, Jonathan Glazer astonished me with this haunting meditation on death and the deep connections we have to those who pass away before us.

I agree with the first reviewer's declaration that this is an underrated film. Indeed it is. In the wrong hands a storyline like this could easily teeter from the sublime into the ridiculous. Not so here. The movie is smartly directed, atmospheric, eerie and superbly acted by all. The score is equally stirring. This is a film that is quietly riveting from start to finish. Highly recommended.

Frighteningly real. Kidman balances and beautifully that fine line between life and death and surviving while existing in neither.
