BLACK OR WHITE is the story of a grandfather (Academy Award® winner Kevin Costner) who is suddenly left to care for his beloved granddaughter. When the little girl’s paternal grandmother (Academy Award® winner Octavia Spencer) seeks custody, a legal battle ensues that forces the families to confront their true feelings on race, forgiveness and understanding. Anchored by an all-star cast and based on real events, the movie is a look at two seemingly different worlds, in which nothing is as simple as black or white.

Couldn't understand why custody couldn't be shared with the grandma. Who would think it was best to give sole custody to an old man on work leave with a drinking problem? The grandma was loving and kisses him in the beginning and end and he wipes it off like she is dirty. It was unrealistic and condescending, as if grandma would be so trifling as to bring all that family to his house and he would really be okay with them running amuck in his house. (Puhleez!!) The father was a loser, not the family.

Started off sad and very slow, but got better and ended on a good positive note. The movie had a powerful message and was supposed to be thought provoking, but it fell short in delivery and performance in some areas in my opinion. Just seemed like something wasn't clicking or something was missing. Not as good as it could have been, but still worth seeing!

I enjoyed the movie, and think that it did tap into some things that are not simply black or white but universal. Addiction, and a mother loyal to a fault as far as her son is concerned. A good story about ultimately two strong families from different worlds, brought together by one sweet and innocent child. They eventually learn to put their differences aside and focus on what really matters. Wouldn't call it a social commentary on race, but simply a story about a family.
