This drama tells the tale of Hollywood's original 'it' couple in the twilight of their star-crossed relationship. When Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton met on the set of Cleopatra, the attraction was immediate. The public was enthralled by their illicit romance, two tempestuous marriages, frequent break-ups and extravagant reunions. Burton and Taylor tells the nostalgic, bittersweet tale of Hollywood's most glamorous couple as they acted together for the last time in Noel Coward's play, Private Lives, in 1983. During the tour public speculation grew about the possibility of another marriage, but in private old frictions played out once again. Beyond the alcohol, pills and the trappings of fame, was love the ultimate crutch that allowed them to escape the realities of their extraordinary lives?

I never cared much for Elizabeth Taylor once she got past her Father of the Bride era. However, I adore Helena Bonham Carter and just had to see her take on this over-the-top film icon. I was not disappointed! Soon I had forgotten who was playing the part; even though Helena does not look just like Liz Taylor, she sounded and acted EXACTLY like her to the point that I truly forgot I was not watching Liz Taylor. And the script is fascinating, with lovely realistic lines that you just don't hear in movies as a rule. The actor playing Richard Burton was very good as well, and he added a wonderful touch of irony and gravitas to keep the tone right. I didn't expect to really like this movie but I loved it. I think it should have been in theatres and I would have handed it some well-deserved rewards had I been in charge of the BAFTAs or Emmys or whatever. Smart, sad, hysterically funny, wistful...Burton and Taylor really does have it all.
