About this movie

A decade since an extraterrestrial force has occupied our planet, deceiving humanity with the promise of peace and unity, Chicago Police Officer William Mulligan (John Goodman, 10 Cloverfield Lane) is tasked with maintaining law and order in a city on the brink of rebellion. Gabriel (Ashton Sanders, Moonlight); the young brother of a fallen militant and the son of Mulligan's ex-partner, is faced with the crucial choice: Collaborate… or fight back. Also starring Vera Farmiga (TV's Bates Motel), Captive State is unlike any future world ever imagined.

All hype. There was another review saying it was only 2 minutes of alien activity and then everything else was just people running around not doing much. Which actually is true. I had hoped for something amazing with John Goodman, especially after 10 Cloverfield Lane, but this was a big flop. He was the only good part to this movie. There was so much potential too.

If you're expecting Independence Day, this ain't it. This is a suspense/thriller billed as an alien invasion flick. Those who rate it poorly were probably expecting action, but I can't say I blame them too much because it is definitely marketed that way. Well worth the price of a rental, some great young actors we'll no doubt see more of. Two👍👍

Captive State gets a 3 and a half, for being genuily scary at times, shocking at the beginning, and thrilling. However it bogs itself down by what seems to be too many stories at once, in what could be constructed better. I give the movie credit for the alien look, they looked like porcupine aliens that was cool, and when the characters were driving in Chicago at night it made me feel like I was there. The film does good with other designs, too.
