About this movie

Directed by Rituparno Ghosh, set in 1902, it's based on a novel by Rabindranath Tagore, a love quadrangle. Binodini (Aishwariya rai) is a young bride whose husband passes away after less than a year of marriage. As a widow, she lives like a caged bird, eager to fly but trapped by society's restrictions for a woman of her circumstance. She arrives at the home of westernized patriarch Mahendra (Prosenjit Chatterjee) as a caretaker to his mother Rajlakshmi (Lily Chakraborty). Mahendra is a newly wed with Ashalata (Raima Sen) and constantly spends time alone together; this infatuation does not last long, as Mahendra begins to see Binodini as his type. The story details the lives of these characters with issues of distrust, adultery and lies. (CBFC U/A CIL/2/5/03-KOL)

Prasenjit is a 3rd class actor who don't know the actual Bengali language. Aishwarya Rai-- I proud while a miss World from Bengal, but how this lady was selected as a Miss World. You can find a more beautiful girl than this lady any where in Bengal.

I find Rituparno's movies quite charming and this one didn't disappoint either. It struck a cord in my heart. A very well made movie indeed.
