Playing out on the evening news is a classic tortoise and hare story - initially derided as an eccentric who wouldn't survive the first day, let alone challenge the world's finest distance runners, "Cliffy" eats up the miles with his distinctive shuffle and transfixes the nation by winning the race against all odds.
