Um þessa kvikmynd

From acclaimed filmmakers Lana Wachowski, Tom Tykwer, and Andy Wachowski, the powerful and inspiring epic drama "Cloud Atlas" explores how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, the present and the future. Action, mystery and romance weave dramatically through the story as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and a single act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution in the distant future. Featuring an all-star cast led by Tom Hanks and Halle Berry.

Begrudgingly I sat through all this tripe to see if it was going to offer up anything that eventually made sense. It didn't. I can usually figure out the what's going on in most movies and the direction it's going in. With this however, I was left waiting in hope for something to happen that made me care about what happened to any of the shallow one dimensional characters. I wish I stopped watching 20 minutes into it. Don't waste your time.

I would describe this film as almost three hours of having only a vague idea of what's going on, with the occasional gross-out and no real conclusion. It is like watching a "Shaun of the Dead" style British comedy one minute, then Avatar the next. The result is a bit of a mess with some dodgy acting (Hanks as an Irishman) and dubious make up (Grant as a old man). Not a complete waste of my life but ultimately pointless.

I really enjoyed this film. It's engaging, quite complex, has a rich and unusual (to say the least) storyline, and a surprising number of well known actors playing outside of type. It absolutely will not be everyone's cup of tea, and it's certainly not mainstream...but if you like a bit of "quirky" and don't mind having to use your brain to connect the dots of the myriad plotlines, you'll maybe find this a genuine gem.
