After marrying a successful Parisian writer known commonly as "Willy" (Dominic West), Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette (Keira Knightley) is transplanted from her childhood home in rural France to the intellectual and artistic splendor of Paris. Soon after, Willy convinces Colette to ghostwrite for him. She pens a semiautobiographical novel about a witty and brazen country girl named Claudine, sparking a bestseller and a cultural sensation. After its success, Colette and Willy become the talk of Paris and their adventures inspire additional Claudine novels. Colette's fight over creative ownership and gender roles drives her to overcome societal constraints, revolutionizing literature, fashion and sexual expression.

The writers ask us to admire a woman who is self-centered, unfaithful and addicted to sexual adventures--along with trying to make us believe her choices were good. There's a bit of historical/cultural inaccuracy going on as well. Some people would call this "theatrical trash." I would probably lean in that direction... and stopped watching it for that very reason.

The direction of the move focused too much on her sexual desires and not on her well deserved recognition for the accomplishments she achieved at a time when women were not accepted in certain careers. The end of the movie gives flashbacks of her life as she wanted to live it. This is where the movie should had started. In reality, her sexual orientation had nothing to do with her greatness as a writer/actor/woman, it was her strength and courage that inspired us.

She agreed to be a ghost writer? So why go and try to fight for it? She lost herself. She was already famous with her husband.
