When Luke Jackson is arrested for drunkenly vandalizing parking meters, he is sentenced to serve time on a prison chain gang. Although the warden, guards and prisoners all try to break Luke's spirit upon his arrival, it soon becomes clear that Luke is not about to play by anyone else's rules. He eventually earns the respect of his fellow inmates by refusing to back down in a fight, and he earns their friendship by figuring out a way for them to get their hard labor done in half the time. Luke eventually becomes a symbol of hope and resilience for his fellow prisoners, but the more he becomes revered by the inmates, the more he becomes a symbol of rebelliousness that must be stamped out by the guards and the warden. I never knew why my Mom had this thing for Paul Newman LOL...I think I know why now 😃. I'm a huge fan of any prison related movies/shows and this did not disappoint. Mr. Newman's dangerous good looks kept me interested every minute as I watched the story unfold. This is a classic "chain gang" movie. Really enjoyed it! Highly recommend! It does not compare to the brilliant story line as "The Shawshank Redemption" but none-the-less a great story and "COOL" movie indeed.

The movie is great. Google charging 4 dollars for just the preview is devious, when they don't tell you that is what you are buying. Well done Google, keep pushing people away one person at a time.

Paul Newman is at his best in this one, & the supporting cast was amazing - George Kennedy, Strother Martin, Wayne Rogers etc... Some of the scenes are unforgettable.
