Manny Singer (Liotta) hires African American Corrina Washington (Goldberg) to work as maid and nanny after the death of his wife. As the talented and intelligent Corrina helps Singer's daughter cope with the loss of her mother--and Singer discovers Corrina's intelligence--a relationship develops between them, growing from respect, to affection ... to love. But Manny and Corrina live in the United States in 1959, and the racism that prevents Corrina from working as more than a maid threatens to tear the two apart.
