About this movie

When her heart is stolen by a seductive stranger, a young woman is swept away to a house atop a mountain of blood-red clay: a place filled with secrets that will haunt her forever. Between desire and darkness, between mystery and madness, lies the truth behind Crimson Peak. From the imagination of director Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth) comes a gothic romance masterpiece starring Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska and Charlie Hunnam. Don't go into this movie expecting a run-of-the-mill horror movie. Edith herself puts it best, "it's not a ghost story, it's a story with a ghost in it." Crimson Peak is very much a gothic novel brought to life, both chilling and romantic. It's a slow burn, but I find the story very engaging and quite beautiful, thanks in no small part to the brilliant performances of the cast. The costumes and sets are equally beautiful, if nothing else, the film is incredibly stylish and a visual treat.

The visual effects and imagery can't be understated and are far and away the best part of this film. The story follows a well-treaded path of love and ghosts but does so to good effect. The story and characters certainly could have gone further, but overall it was a pretty good Saturday night film and recommended for fans of the genre.

I really liked the look of this, but there weren't enough scares and it really dragged. The only good thing I can say is, I didn't fall asleep.
