Those who say this movie is realistic were obviously never in the US Navy. It's sad to see such high caliber actors in a such a ridiculously bad movie. Things that go on in this "realistic" movie NEVER happen in real life...from the dog, to the mutiny, to the "technology" (i.e. sonar and combat/weapon systems). If you can suspend disbelief as one must do with most military-related movies, it may be an enjoyable 2 hours, but your time could be spent on something better.

Quality Denzel, except no machoism as he takes a belt in the face from Gene Hackman, without so much as a retaliatory whimper. Great suspense with two lead actors playing two dominant, if opposite roles. If we're brutally honest, we all carry both men's characteristics and could side with either or both as they both try to save humanity from the unthinkable.

Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington in a great and true event inspired film.. fairly realistic as far as possible scenario at the time. Obviously no captain is going to bring nor be allowed to bring their dog no matter how cute or well trained lol. Something would have to be wrong to not like dogs or be able to get into this movie.. I think anyone could appreciate and enjoy this movie if they sat and payed attention and tried to appreciate the supposed gravity of the situation. P.S. I love naval and military movies and one a lot of people probably aren't as familiar with that is somewhat similiar and very worth watching, (yea yea hunt for red october... lol everyone knows that movie though..) ..the movie I meant was Phantom. Another submarine movie with Ed Harris that was IMHO put together very well.
