Wounded criminal Dickie (Lionel Stander) and his dying partner are on the run after an unsuccessful heist. They take refuge at a beachfront castle owned by George and Teresa (Donald Pleasence and Françoise Dorléac), who at first are unwilling hosts to the criminals. Dickie has no difficulty dominating the weak-willed George and his compliant wife and holds them hostage in their own home as they wait for the arrival of the mysterious Mr. Kattlebach.
